Restore company data from a backup or restore point

Choose a recovery method, replace or copy a company from JSON, restore an earlier dataset, and verify records and attachments afterward.

Recovery options
OptionScope
Undo in a deletion notificationReverse that supported action while its Undo remains available and valid.
Restore pointReplace the company’s working dataset with a retained snapshot.
JSON import into this companyReplace the working dataset from a downloaded company backup.
JSON import into a new companyCreate a separate company from the backup and switch to it.
CSV importAdd supported rows; it is not a restore operation.

Export the current company first if you may need its present state. Check the company identity and the desired recovery date. A full restore can replace correct changes made after the snapshot along with the mistake you wanted to reverse.

Import a downloaded backup

  1. In Settings → Data, choose Import and select a Cap Table JSON export.
  2. Review the file and choose Replace this company or A new company.
  3. Confirm the destination and import.
  4. Check the company selector and reconcile the restored records.

The file limit is 20 MiB. A holdings CSV, a printed report, and a History-only JSON export are not company backups. Use the JSON produced by Settings’ company Export action.

If creating the destination succeeds but importing fails, retry into the new company identified by the dialog. Do not create repeated copies simply because the import step failed. Import into an existing company takes a restore point when there is working data to preserve.

Restore a retained snapshot

Open Settings → Data → Restore points. Review each point’s operation label, age, and record counts. Choose Restore for the intended point and read the confirmation.

The restore replaces the profile, classes, stakeholders, securities, round and exit scenarios, hiring plan, and recent activity with that snapshot. The app first captures the current working state when there is data to preserve. Permanent transaction History is retained and records the restore; it does not rewind with the recent activity feed.

Up to five restore points are retained, and size constraints can reduce that number. They are automatic operation snapshots, not a daily backup schedule. A first operation on an empty company may have no earlier dataset to capture.

Verify the recovered state

  • Check the company name and whether the sample-data banner matches the restored dataset.
  • Compare stakeholder and security counts, then reconcile ownership at the intended date.
  • Review plan reserves, valuation history, saved scenarios, and hiring rows.
  • Open important attachments to confirm that their backing files are accessible.
  • Inspect History for the restore or import outcome and any source archive.

If a connection or recovery error appears, follow the displayed recovery controls before repeating the operation. See Troubleshoot saves and recovery.

Retain backups independently of restore points

Deleting a restore point removes that recovery option. New snapshots can also age older points out of the retained list. Downloaded company backups do not include the list of restore points, and attachment contents must be retained separately.

Delete all data clears the selected company’s working records, takes a restore point when applicable, and retains permanent History. Delete company removes that company and its permanent History. Export the company, History, and needed files before deleting a company you must retain.
